Terminologies used in Stamp Collecting ? First Day Covers

First Day Covers / Envelopes.

Many stamp collectors clamour for first day covers. First day covers are issued or brought out to mark any important event in the history or to honour any important personality in the society and stamp collectors attach much importance to such first day covers or envelopes. This is one of the interesting branches of stamp collecting because the covers actually provide information about a certain major event.

Any First day cover will have three components that make them special first day cover: the envelope, stamp and postmark. The main or the key element in any first day cover is the ?postmark with the date? affixed on the stamp, which indicates that, the cover or the stamp has been cancelled. Generally, the United States Postal Service releases a stamp in one city on the day before a new issue is sold and even issue of a new stamp is being celebrated in a grand manner.
